Meet the Artisans of al-Darb al-Ahmar – photo essay series

A selection of photo essays about some of the artisans who live and work in and around Cairo’s al-Darb al-Ahmar. These interviews shed light on the age-old techniques employed by artisans to create their everyday masterpieces and showcase the people and personalities that make up daily life of one of Cairo’s most historic neighbourhoods.

Al-Darb al-Ahmar, a maze of narrow and winding alleyways, connects visitors with a past and a way of life that can be found in very few places left in the world today. A huge array of crafts are made there from brass lanterns, to tents, glassware, and furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl using designs that are unique to Egyptian culture, the city of Cairo and, in some cases, the district itself.
